Most visitors to Musanze are thinking about the gorillas. And they should be, this is the town that puts you within arm's reach of one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife encounters, just 17 kilometres from the gates of Volcanoes National Park. But Musanze, known until recently by its colonial name, Ruhengeri, is far more than a stopover. It is a town with genuine energy: a market that roars to life before dawn, a local food scene built on fresh mountain produce, streets lined with volcanic-stone buildings, and a surrounding landscape that stops you mid-sentence every time you look up.
What to know before you Visit Musanze
The location is at the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes, which means that the cool climate, misty conditions, and rugged terrain start from the moment you arrive. The distances appear to be small on the map but take longer than you expect due to the winding roads, which sometimes start off clear in the morning with clouds forming later.

Where to Stay in Musanze
Musanze has accommodation for all budgets, from ultra-luxury lodges at the foot of the volcanoes to comfortable mid-range guesthouses in the town centre. Lodges closer to Kinigi offer the most dramatic volcano views and the most convenient access for early gorilla trek departures. In-town guesthouses are better value and put you in the heart of the local atmosphere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Musanze is approximately 110 kilometres from Kigali by road, taking 2 to 2.5 hours on the main RN4 highway. The road is in excellent condition and fully paved. Public buses and minibuses run regularly, or private transfers can be arranged from Kigali.
You don't have to, but it is strongly recommended. Gorilla treks start at 7am at the Kinigi park headquarters. Staying in or near Musanze means a short, relaxed morning drive rather than a predawn departure from Kigali. Most gorilla trekkers stay at least two nights in Musanze.
Quite a lot. The Musanze Caves are a remarkable half-day experience. The Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo are a stunning day trip. Volcano hikes (Bisoke, Karisimbi, Muhabura) all depart from this region. The Iby'iwacu Cultural Village is nearby. And the local market and food scene are worth several hours of unhurried exploration.
