Serenity by the Shores of Rwanda

There is a quality of light on Lake Kivu in the late afternoon that is unlike anywhere else in Rwanda. The water turns a deep, still blue. The hills fold into each other in the distance, green on green on green. Fishermen drift in wooden pirogues, casting nets in slow, practiced arcs. And if you're sitting on a terrace with a cold Primus beer, watching all of this unfold, you'll understand exactly why travellers who 'just stop for one night' on Lake Kivu end up staying four.

Into Rwanda's Liquid Heart

One of Africa's Great Lakes, Lake Kivu stretches for 90 kilometres along Rwanda's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. At 1,460 metres above sea level, it sits high in the Albertine Rift and enjoys a mild, pleasant climate year-round. Its shores are dotted with small fishing villages, forested peninsulas, and tropical islands that can be explored by boat. The two main Rwandan gateway towns; Rubavu (formerly Gisenyi) in the north and Rusizi (formerly Cyangugu) in the south; offer very different characters and atmospheres, and each is worth several days of your time.

What to Do on Lake Kivu

Boat Trips and Island Hopping

The lake is scattered with beautiful islands; Napoleon Island, Amahoro Island, Nkombo Island; each accessible by hired motorboat or kayak. Napoleon Island is famous for its enormous colony of fruit bats, which take to the sky at dusk in a dramatic, swirling cloud of thousands. Amahoro (meaning 'peace' in Kinyarwanda) is forested and serene, perfect for a picnic. A full day of island hopping is one of the best things you can do in Rwanda.

Kayaking and Water Sports

The lake's calm, sheltered waters make it ideal for kayaking. Several operators in Rubavu and Rusizi offer half-day and full-day kayak rental and guided routes. Stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, and sailing are also available. The scenery from the water; the green hills rising on both sides, the DRC peaks visible to the west; is spectacular from every angle.

Rubavu Town

Rubavu (formerly Gisenyi) is the most popular base on Lake Kivu. A laid-back, sun-drenched lakeside town with a proper beach, a growing restaurant scene, and a main street lined with mango trees. It's the kind of place where you sit down for lunch and suddenly realise three hours have passed. The town's proximity to the Virunga Volcanoes; including the still-active Nyiragongo across the border; gives it a dramatic, almost cinematic backdrop.

Fishing Village Visits

Hiring a local fisherman to take you out before dawn and watching the fishing process in action is a genuinely intimate experience; one that most tourists never have. The fishermen of Lake Kivu have worked these waters for generations, using traditional techniques and handmade nets. Many local guesthouses can arrange introductions.

Where to Stay at Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu has some of Rwanda's most beautiful accommodation; boutique hotels and lodges perched above the water with terrace views that stop you mid-conversation. Options range from international-standard luxury resorts in Rubavu to smaller, more characterful guesthouses on quiet peninsulas.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes; Lake Kivu is safe for swimming and water sports. Unlike many African lakes, it is free from bilharzia (schistosomiasis) and crocodiles, making it genuinely swimmable. The water is clean, clear, and pleasantly cool at altitude. Most hotels on the lake have designated swimming areas.

  • It depends on your wider itinerary. Rubavu (north) is better if you're combining Lake Kivu with Volcanoes National Park, and has a more developed tourism infrastructure with beach access and restaurants. Rusizi (south) is better if you're coming from or going to Nyungwe Forest, and has a more authentic, off-the-beaten-path feel.

  • A border crossing to Goma (DRC) is possible from Rubavu for those with the appropriate visa, but we strongly advise checking current travel advisories before any cross-border travel. The region on the Rwandan side is completely safe; the DRC situation varies and requires current advice.

  • We recommend a minimum of two nights. One night is barely enough to relax; two nights allows a full day on the water — boat trip, island visit, kayak, sundowner. If you're using Rubavu as a base before or after Volcanoes National Park, three nights is ideal.

  • Napoleon Island (also called Ijwi) hosts one of the largest straw-coloured fruit bat colonies in Africa; estimated at over 100,000 individuals. At dusk, the bats take flight in a dramatic, swirling cloud that fills the sky for 20–30 minutes. It's one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Rwanda and easily observed from a boat.
